THE Captures Top Prize Of 2024 Dawg Days Tournament

The game between Mansfield and the five time defending champion White Shirts was the most intense game of the first round of the winner’s bracket in the Top Dawg division. Mario Young bullied his way inside for eight points to lead Mansfield. Cam Brooks-Harris scored 11 (three three pointers) of the first 16 points for White Shirts to give them a slight lead at the midpoint of the game. This is when Marcus Ernst put White Shirts on his back. Mansfield had no answer for Ernst. The talented Ernst scored on the interior and used his big, athletic frame to attack from the outside as he scored 12 of his team’s final 14 points to pull away from Mansfield by the count of 30-21. Ernst tallied an impressive 18 points to lead the way for White Shirts.

Norwayne Rolls To Another Championship

Dalton and Norwayne found themselves in a first round chess match in the High School division. Defending champion Norwayne found themselves in a big hole early against a very physical Dalton team. Norwayne did not panic, and their perimeter shooting allowed them to catch Dalton by the game’s midpoint. Norwayne got three point field goals from Braden West, Tyson Hess, and Parker Metsker to close the gap. Braden West hit two more long balls to extend the lead. From there, Norwayne pulled away for a 30-19 victory. West led the Norwayne assault with 15 points. Brady Hignight scored nine points for Dalton in defeat.

Versatile Hoopers Claim Division Championship

Pool play games were very competitive in the Young Bucks division. Behind Jaxson Gasser’s 15 points, the Hoopers scored a convincing 30-16 win over the Ohio Steppers in their first game. Akron Elite found themselves in a battle with Silly Sam in the first round of pool play as well. Carter Underwood knocked down three triples as part of his team high 15 points to keep Silly Sam in the game throughout, but that was not enough to overcome a 21 point explosion from Akron Elite’s Mason Chapman. Chapman nailed five three pointers and used his quickness to get inside for the rest of his offensive output in leading his team to the 30-26 victory.

Wooster Storms Their Way To Division Title

Triway and Wooster hooked up in an ultra competitive bracket challenge game in the 8th grade division. Both teams had rolled through their pool play games relatively easily, with the exception being Triway’s hard fought 28-22 win against Norwayne. The bracket challenge game between the two undefeated teams was intense from the beginning. Triway was the first team to be able to slow down Wooster’s Sam Schantz. Schantz had scored 30 total points in dominating Wooster’s two pool play games. With Schantz finding the going a little bit tougher against Triway, Wooster turned to Hudson Braxstorm for the majority of their offense. Braxstorm added a three pointer to the variety of baskets he scored inside to keep the game close throughout with his total of 13 points. Triway was not to be denied in this game though, as they rode the hot shooting of Caiden Soss to a 30-24 victory and the top seed on the tournament bracket. Soss nailed four of his team’s five three-point baskets on his way to a dominant 16-point performance for Triway.

Neia Kay Leads Xtreme 2030 To Division Title

After overwhelming the other three teams in their pool, Xtreme 2030 found themselves in a battle with the Dalton Lady Dawgs in their bracket challenge game. Three pointers by Lena Neuenschwander and Kennah Hignight helped the Dalton Lady Dawgs build an early lead. Xtreme 2030, who had won each of their previous three games in blowout fashion, was facing their first adversity of the day. Neia Kay stepped in and rescued them. Kay started off her assault by attacking the basket, but then started hitting contested three pointers as the Dalton Lady Dawgs defense begin focusing more on her. By the time she was done, she had painted an 18-point masterpiece and led her team to a 27-18 victory. Anna Cutlip chipped in seven points for Xtreme 2030. Kennah Hignight (nine points) and Casey Miller (six points) led the way in defeat for the Dalton Lady Dawgs.

OABGC Storms Their Way To Championship

The Littles and OABGC held the top two seeds heading into bracket play in the Junior Girls division. Kenzy Mosley poured in a game high 10 points to lead OABGC to a hard fought 24-18 victory over The Littles in pool play to help secure the top seed for OABGC. Gemma Bocelli chipped in eight points for OABGC, while Emma Crumbley and Leah Cobb each scored six points to lead the way for The Littles.

Saliola's Late Game Heroics Lift J-Town Ballers To Title

The J-Town Ballers and Parents Just Don’t Understand entered bracket play in the Junior Division as the top two seeds after soundly defeating everyone in their paths. Hot Shots earned their chance at upsetting Parents Just Don’t Understand by grinding out a tough 28-21 quarterfinal win against Better Life Coffee. Kason Leach (10 points) and Cooper Froelich (8 points) led the way for Hot Shots, while Ashton Gherian (11 points) and Elijah Heatwole (10 points) carried the scoring load for Better Life Coffee. Parents Just Don’t Understand wasted little time in dispatching Hot Shots 30-8 in the semifinals behind the prolific shooting of Derrick Perryman (16 points) and the high-level guard play of Grayson Bates (11 points).

E3 General Services Rolls To Summer League Title

The heaviest drama of the 2024 Dawg Days Summer League took place in the first semifinal game between Death Row and Details. Details was coming off two consecutive Dawg Days Summer League titles, boasted the top two scorers in the league, and had defeated every team in the league by at least 20 points during the regular season. Despite Death Row being focused and ready to play from the start, Details still built a 21-12 lead after a 10-0 run midway through the first half. Led by Denerio Bryant’s 14 first half points, Death Row responded with a game altering 22-4 run to grab a 34-25 lead late in the first half. A flurry of points and steals in the last 30 seconds of the half brought Details to within three points at halftime.

White Shirts Win Record Tying Fifth Straight Tournament Title

White Shirts and J’s & D was a heavyweight matchup in the first round of the Top Dawg division. Both teams were loaded with enough talent, size, and skill to be considered favorites to claim the grand prize. With both teams recognizing the importance of staying in the winner’s bracket early on, this game was fiercely competitive from the start. Dawg Days Basketball 2022 MVP Marcus Ernst was all over the place for White Shirts, challenging shots at the rim, rebounding, and scoring on the interior. While Ernst (eight points) was doing his thing on the inside, DaVonte Harris (15 points) was filling it up from the outside for White Shirts. J’s & D went to Joe Pope for the majority of their offense. The versatile Pope knocked in three long balls and used his full arsenal of moves around the basket to score a game high 19 points to lead J’s & D to the 30-29 opening round victory. Jason Pitts added seven points in the game for J’s & D.

Norwayne Rolls To Undefeated High School Division Championship

After two blowouts to start pool play, the games in this year’s High School division were extremely competitive. Behind Braden West’s 14-point performance, coupled with 10 points from Parker Metsker, Norwayne slammed Woo Tang Clan 30-11. Tristan Walker and Anthony Carmean each tallied five points in defeat for Woo Tang Clan. The Ballers followed suit by hammering Team USA 30-13 behind Malachi Gray’s 17-point explosion. Kodah Allen contributed 12 points for the winners while Dack Mutters led Team USA with eight points.

Average Joes Claim Hard Fought Title Aginst AK27

AK27 looked to be the dominant team in the Young Bucks division early on, as they scored a 30-7 win against tBt and followed that up with a 30-15 victory against Hair Jordan. Braylon Gamble used his crafty handle and smooth skills to lead the way with 15 points against tBt, while Marcus Council Jr added 11. Carter Hignight led tBt with four points in defeat. While Gamble and Council Jr were lighting up the nets from three-point land, Braylon Arnold cleaned things up inside in leading AK27 with 12 points in their win against Hair Jordan. Braxton Dawson knocked down two three pointers to lead Hair Jordan with six points.

Ringerz Roll To 8th Grade Division Title

Everyone in the 8th Grade division took their shots at the Ringerz during pool play, but nobody could get over the hump to take them down. The Ringerz took down Risen Elite 30-23 behind 13 points from Darrius Howard and nine points each from Jack Thomas and Adrian Jelks. JJ Bedingfield scored a game high 14 points for Risen Elite in defeat. The next game would be the closest anyone came to the Ringerz all day as the Panthers pushed them hard all the way to the final buzzer before the Ringerz escaped with a hard fought 21-18 victory. Jack Thomas (eight points) and Adrian Jelks (seven points) led the way for the Ringerz, while Joe Luchitz scored nine points to pace the Panthers. The last team in line to challenge the favored Ringerz were the Smithie Ballers. Brady Sidle (12 points) fired in four three pointers to keep his team attached throughout the game, but Jack Thomas (12 points) was unstoppable going to the basket and the Ringerz pulled away late for a 30-24 win. Javon Mosley made two three pointers as part of his eight-point total for the Ringerz as well.

NE Ohio Holds Off Furious Norwayne Rally To Clinch Title

Behind the dominant inside play of Sean’Say Tanner, NE Ohio breezed through pool play in the Biddy Ball division with a record of 3-0. NE Ohio defeated Puttin’ In The Work 30-15, Norwayne 30-3, and the Panthers 30-14. Other than that, the pool play games in this division were hotly contested.

Vikes Trio Battle Their Way To Junior Division Title

The Junior Division featured some intense nailbiters in pool play. Wooster BMW found themselves involved in both of them. The first tight contest came in their second game against the Jackson Bears. This game went back and forth throughout, with neither team able to pull away from the other. In the end, Jackson was able to scratch out a 30-28 victory. JJ Rohr led the winners with 14 points, while Hudson Brightbill contributed nine points. Blake Terakedis was a one-man wrecking crew for Wooster. Terakedis scored from all over the floor while amassing a game high 15 points. Will Snowbarger fired in two three pointers as part of his eight-point effort for Wooster as well.

Hlaudy Leads Xtreme To Dominant Championship Run

Hot Shots stormed through pool play in the Junior Girls division by dispatching of Details (14-10), Golden Girls (16-8), and Dalton (24-10) to earn the top seed on the bracket. Xtreme was looming as the number 2 seed after blowout victories against Dalton (28-8) and the Waynedale Golden Bears (28-16). Crossover Crew handed Xtreme their only loss on the day by a 30-19 count. Crossover Crew elected to play in the boys division in bracket play.

Grizzlies Roar To Puppy Division Championship

A very vibrant, talented group of teams made up the Puppy division in Dawg Days Basketball 2023. The opening round game between Big Buckets and the Grizzlies was one of the most competitive games in pool play. Big Buckets battled the entire game, but they were unable to slow down Cooper Kavanagh. Kavanagh’s 16-point outburst led the Grizzlies to a 26-16 win. Graham Cathey scored 10 points to lead Big Buckets in defeat.

Details Wins Second Straight Summer League Title In OT

The first semifinal game featured a rematch of last year’s championship game, which Details won in overtime. 23 And Under, fresh off their overtime quarterfinal win against Rim Wreckers, was looking to get back to the championship game and finish the job this time around. Carter Piatt gave 23 And Under an early 2-0 lead, but that was the only lead they would have all night long. Braylon Wenger scored inside and was fouled on the next play to give Details the lead, and the top seeded Details team rode the strength of their half court defense to build a comfortable 33-16 halftime lead. Braylon Wenger made two three pointers just before the midpoint of the half to give Details a 17-7 lead. The game would never get closer than that again. Wenger led Details with 15 points in the first half, while Carter Piatt led 23 And Under with 11 points.

Smithville Captures Girl's Summer League Championship

Triway ended the regular season of the 2023 Dawg Days Basketball Girl’s Summer League on a high note, defeating previously unbeaten Smithville 40-35 in one of the most intense games the league has ever seen. That earned the Titans the top seed for the final four that was being played the next night. Triway drew #4 seeded Massillon in the semifinals. Triway had defeated Massillon earlier in the summer by a 50-31 count.

White Shirts Win Fourth Consecutive Top Dawg Title

The triple elimination bracket play format of the Top Dawg division ensures that every game will be intense. Sometimes, the early round games are as intense as the championship games as everyone tries to avoid the dreaded climb from the lower brackets back into the championship series. This year’s opening round games saw three nailbiters as teams did all they could to position themselves for the easiest path to the tournament title.

Details Outlast Norwayne Tigers In High School Division

The High School division started off with Details looking like the team to beat. Details rode a 22-point explosion from Braylon Wenger in dismantling the Norwayne Tigers 30-10 in the first round of pool play. Ethan Hann led Norwayne with six points in defeat. The favorites followed that up with a 10-point victory against the Blue Ballers. Kyrie Gaut got in on the act in this game for Details. Gaut fired in five three pointers to lead Details with 15 points, while Braylon Wenger chipped in another 13. Ray Stokes led the Blue Ballers with nine points.

Pandas Storm Thier Way To Young Bucks Crown

The Pandas steamrolled through their pool play games in the Young Bucks division, winning all three games by double digit margins. Their game against Team Red went back and forth for awhile before the Pandas pulled away down the stretch for a 30-20 win. Braden West (13 points) and Parker Metsker (11 points) provided most of the scoring punch for the Pandas, while Team Red was led by DeCarlo Prince (9 points) and Leigh Cotton (8 points).

Hoopers Claim 8th Grade Division Title

The 8th grade division started off with a bang as the Hoopers and Layup Laydown fought down to the wire in the first game of pool play. The game went back and forth from start to finish. Jalen Hackett (12 points) and RJ Walgate (11 points) paved the way for The Hoopers, but they could not overcome the stellar play of Brayden Cox. Cox scored from all over the court while recording a whopping 19 points to lead Layup Laydown to a 30-29 win.

The Ringers Grind Out Biddy Ball Division Title

Perry and The Ringers seemed a step above the rest of the field in the Biddy Ball Division after two rounds of pool play. Both teams won their first two games convincingly, while every other team in the field had at least one loss. The two favorites played in a bracket challenge game to determine who got the top seed on the bracket.

All Ohio Red Outlasts NE Ohio For Title

NE Ohio and All Ohio Red were on a collision course from the moment the Junior division tipped off. Both teams ripped through their pool play games with three double digit victories. All Ohio Red largely rode the hot hands of Tyson Cornett and Quincy Balcomb-Prichard, while NE Ohio had very balanced scoring throughout the day.

Clutch Plays Leads Waynedale to Division Title

The Junior Girls division featured many very competitive games from start to finish. Details was ready to play from the start, as they defeated a very good Waynedale team 14-8 and followed that up with a 12-9 win over the Lady Hoopers to vault them into the top seed for bracket play. Emmersyn Lehman and Casey Miller each pumped in six points in the win against Waynedale, and Lehman followed that up with another six points to lead the way against the Lady Hoopers.

Retired Not Expired Wins Fifth Straight Summer League Title

Retired Not Expired won their 5th consecutive Dawg Days Summer League championship by defeating Dalton 46-39 in the championship game. The game went back and forth in the early stages of the game. Dalton’s three-point shooting was able to offset the inside and transition points of Retired Not Expired. Bethany Koons (7 points) hit two consecutive three pointers to extend Retired Not Expired’s lead to 19-12 midway through the first half. After cutting the lead to 22-17 on a Kendall Maibach (5 points) three-point shot, Dalton went on a prolonged scoring drought that saw Retired Not Expired stretch their lead to as many as 15 points. Dalton continued to battle as the second half wore on and cut the lead down to seven on a few different occasions. Tara Schaffter (12 points) always seemed to have an answer to the Dalton runs as she worked her way inside for six huge points in the latter stages of the game. Dalton ran out of time to make their comeback and Retired Not Expired claimed another summer league title. Maddy West led Dalton in scoring with 8 points.

Youth Movement! Details Captures Summer League Title

Youth was served in the 2022 Dawg Days Basketball Men’s Summer League. Details held the top spot in the standings for the duration of the regular season, and then capped off their title run with an exhilarating finish in the championship game despite not having one player over 18 years of age on their roster. Jalen Wenger’s improbable 32-foot three pointer in between two defenders sent the championship game to overtime after it appeared that Kelly’s Boys were in line to pull off two quality comeback wins on the same night. Points were hard to come by in overtime. Nick Swartz made a three pointer to counter a Jalen Wenger free throw to give Kelly’s Boys a two-point lead with just over a minute to play. Braylon Wenger knifed inside for a nifty layup to tie the score on the ensuing possession. After Kelly’s Boys were stymied at the rim, Braylon Wenger completed the scoring with another drive and finish. Details got one final stop to seal the win and the league title.
